I wanted a one click solution which would not only allow me to run regular backups on the blog but also allow me run regular malware scans and restore my blog with ease in an unlikely event that something was to go wrong.

Enter every bloggers insurance against hackers and a potential calamity.

Backup Buddy

In one of my earlier posts, Backup Buddy only made a special appearance on my list of top 10 wordpress plugins but after reviewing and testing all the incredible features this plug-in has to offer, I decided to dedicate an entire post to highlight why this is a must have plug-in for any blog or wordpress site owner.

Install And Licensing Backup Buddy

Installing backup buddy is as simple as installing any other wordpress plug-in. Simply upload the plug-in and activate. Once activated a dedicated settings tab is available on the left sidebar panel.

The getting started section of the plug-in contains all the necessary help information to get you up and running with using the plug-in. It also contains step-by-step instructions on how backup and restore a wordpress site from start to finish.

Creating Your First Backup With Backup Buddy

You can access all the options for creating your first backup inside the “backup & restore” section of the plug-in panel. Here you have two options to create your backups. A database backup or a full backup.

With the database backup only the content and associated settings are backed up. However, with a complete backup, the entire instance of wordpress alongwith the content are backed up.

If you have several subdomains inside your main hosting account the full backup will also backup the individuals subdirectories therein, which may lead to slower performance during the backup process due to multiple wordpress instances.

The import buddy option will simply restore the database (content) backup of your site to a fresh wordpress install. Additionally, Backup Buddy also allows an option to repair any wordpress instance with a click of a button.

Malware And Phishing Protection With Backup Buddy

One of the other great features of backup buddy is the fully automated malware scan which checks all the wordpress scripts for possible malware or phishing vulnerabilities. Malware are malicious scripts injected to access personal and sensitive information. A potential malware infection can have your site blacklisted or even deindexed completely by the search engines so it is important to keep your wordpress installs up to date to ensure that you have access to all the latest security fixes.

Scheduling Backups With Backup Buddy

The scheduling feature is another handy option to run backups of your site at a pre-designated times at recurring intervals including monthly, twice monthly, weekly, daily or even hourly.

The settings tab also allows you to control a number of options including user notification upon successful backup completion. Setting passwords for import buddy to prevent unauthorized access to the database files and also an option to send backup reminders to webmasters.

Lastly, Backup Buddy also offers the ability to directly upload backups and archives on the cloud for added security.

If you are have multiple sub domains within your master wordpress install, Backup Buddy also give you the option to exclude subdomain wordpress directories from the backup file. This is recommended if you have several sub domain folders nested within the root domain.

Verdict

Backup Buddy offers so much than what would be sufficient for most blog owners, the ability to create a complete backup with a single click of a button.

After using Backup Buddy for several months, I now have complete peace of mind that my valuable real estate is fully backed up and protected in case if a malicious attack. Not sure how much money is that worth but I can tell you that it’s worth way more than Backup Buddy’s small price tag.

I consider this plug-in near indispensable for serious site owners who wish to protect their valuable real estate.

Anshul – TOTALLY agree with you about BackupBuddy. WOW does it ever save time! I love it so much I am going to write a review of it on my own site and recommend it to my readers! 🙂

I like to use it on a fresh site, just to set up my plug ins, and then back THAT up – then every time I make a new site after that I can import from BUB. 🙂 A great time saver – although I don’t like how then I can’t see that wordpress installation in my fantastico area on my hosting cpanel. Do you know any way around this? ie when you use the import.php script – how to still get wordpress in your hosting cpanel??

Hey Clare, not sure what could be causing that. You sure its not in another section of your cPanel?

Hey Anshul, I’m always in worry of the safety of my blog and I want my blog to be secure from hackers all the time. I’m also using some extra security plugins to reduce the chances of getting hacked. I’ve heard about BackUp Buddy lots of time but never took action on buying it. Seems now this is the time to buy this plugin.

    Thanks for the awesome review.
